Hobart City

Tasmania's capital city is situated in a Mediterranean climate on the best natural harbour in the world - the Derwent River.

The Derwent is the venue for the finish to the famous and most rugged yacht race in the world - the Sydney/Hobart Classic.  Yachting seems to be in the blood of every Hobartian and both small and large yachts abound every day on the Derwent, easily viewed from the many vantage points along the Eastern and Western Shores of the river.  Sea breezes are captured on most summer days, bringing fresh relief from the warm summer days.

The Theatre Royal, Hobart, is Australia's oldest Theatre and the only example of the Victorian bijou style remaining in this country. The Theatre was originally built in 1834 by a consortium of business leaders with the aim of establishing a permanent theatre for the rapidly expanding colony. Opening in 1837, the Theatre offered its original patrons entertainment ranging from music hall to cock fights. Since 1837 the Theatre Royal has been remodelled, refurbished and restored. The addition of the Gallery in the 1850s, new decoration to the auditorium in the 1890s and the extension of the fly tower in the 1980s are just a few of the contributions which successive generations of Tasmanians have made to their Theatre. Saved from demolition several times - most notably in the late 1940s when Sir Lawrence Olivier was among the many to leap to its defence - the Theatre has withstood a disastrous fire, public criticism and the rigours of age. Today the Theatre Royal successfully combines the old with the new - an auditorium that is simply breathtaking with its central dome, intricate mouldings and rich colours, and gilt, while backstage technology comes to the fore with computerised lighting, counterweight flying and fully modernised dressing rooms. The Theatre has an experienced production department, professional management, and a modern computerised box office. The Theatre Royal presents a year round program of theatre and entertainment, including a subscription season of some of the best Australian theatre available, but as well is available to hire at reasonable rates.

Wellington Park

Wilderness on Hobart's doorstep, Wellington Park provides walking, climbing, abseiling, cycling and sightseeing opportunities less than half an hours drive from the city. Pillinger Drive turns right off Huon Road just before Fern Tree and gives easy access to the mountains maze of tracks and to the picnic and barbecue facilities at The Springs. The road passes beneath the towering crags of the Organ Pipes, a Mecca for climbers. Views from the summit are superb this is the starting point of the Mt Wellington cycle descent, one of Australia's most challenging and exciting alpine rides.

Stefano Lubiana Wines and Winery

Stefano Lubiana makes outstanding wines from his own pinot noir and chardonnay grapes - including a sparkling champagne-style wine that has won universal acclaim. Views of the Derwent River from the 10hectare vineyard are stunning. Only about 20 kilometres north of Hobart, just north of the Bridgewater bridge on the western shore of the Derwent.  We've personally tried his top range Pinot Noir and we believe it's the best in the world.

The Franklin River, the other of the wild rivers for which the park is named, is one of the world's great wilderness rivers and is in the heart of Tasmania's uninhabited south-west. Rafting tours conducted on a regular basis, most commencing in Queenstown. The Lyell Highway passes through the national park, and there are several walks accessible from the roadside. The Franklin River Picnic Area is located where the highway crosses the river, and there is an interpretative rainforest walk (easy, 20 min) to the river. Nelson Falls is a 20 min walk, and has a viewing platform at the base of the falls. Donaghy's Hill is a moderately easy 40 min (return) walk to a lookout, where the Franklin and Collingwood Rivers can be viewed along with mountains in the vicinity such as Frenchman's Cap and the King William Range. Significantly more challenging is the walk to Frenchmans Cap itself. Passing through testing wilderness (below), this provides great alpine scenery but is only for very experienced bushwalkers and takes approximately four days.
