Port Arthur Penitentiary
Ghouls & Ghost Tours!

Winner of the 2004 Tasmanian Tourism Awards Major attractions Port Arthur is the most intact and evocative convict prison in Australia. It covers 98 hectares around picturesque Mason Cove and is dotted with many ruined and complete buildings set amidst beautiful gardens and rolling lawns. Take a tour with one of our experienced and knowledgeable guides, or follow your own inclinations. Visit the two most impressive buildings on site, the Penitentiary and the Separate Prison and see where convict discipline changed from physical to psychological terror. Stand as the convicts did in the cubicles of the Chapel or in the total silence and darkness of the punishment cell and imagine their sufferings. In the furnished military and civilian homes you can see where the free community whiled away the long, dark evenings. Hear the Parson and the Commandant squabbling over the best way to reform and punish convicts in the Parsonage. Wander through the newly-reconstructed Government Gardens as the free folk of the settlement once did. You can also take a special garden tour. Our strolling players will entertain you with a series of plays on convict themes in January. Except in August, the admission price includes a harbour cruise on our new 24 metre catamaran ferry. For a small extra charge you can visit the convict-period cemetery on the tiny Isle of the Dead. By night, if you are brave enough, why don't you visit the ghosts on a lantern-lit tour? Fortify yourself by dining at our award-winning restaurant, Felons, where you can enjoy Tasmania's finest food and wine. The Visitor Centre also houses a gift shop, a cafe and an Interpretation Gallery where you can play the Lottery of Life game, armed with your new convict identity.

Historic Port Arthur is the place of dreams and nightmares. Terrify yourself on the Ghost Tour, take in the history of Tasmania's Penal Colony/Convict past. We can organize you entry and book you in for the tours before you arrive in Tasmania. The Tasman Peninsula where Port Arthur is located is a beautiful area with stunning cliff top walks, huge forests and pristine beaches. There are local sea-fishing tours available, sea-plane charters, kayaking, abseiling and many more activities in the area. There is also a huge variety of accommodation from backpackers, tents, cabins to resort style and self-contained cottages.

Port Arthur is officially Tasmania's number one tourist attraction, and no visit to the state is complete without seeing it. Port Arthur was established as a convict settlement and soon became Australia's largest, in operation from the 1830 until 1877. Guides interact with visitors, and although there are static displays, visitors are encouraged to explore various features of the ruins, helping to give them a sense of what life was like in 19th century Port Arthur.

The penitentiary can be toured, as can the model prison, where convicts were forbidden to talk or set eyes upon each other. The ruins of the church are also in the Port Arthur Historic Site.

During the day, many visitors stop at the Tasmanian Devil Park in nearby Taranna , where the Tasmanian Devils are fed at 11 am daily, and other native animals and birds (wombats, quolls, eagles) can be seen close-up. The Bush Mill is another popular stop, with its historic timber mill, settlement displays, and steam railway. There are nightly ghost tours to the convict ruins, and it is possible to cruise to the Isle of the Dead.
To the south of Port Arthur is Remarkable Cave, created by wave action, and the start of a four to five hour (return) walk to Crescent Bay.

Port Arthur is a 90 minute drive from the Tasmanian Capital, Hobart, but visitors are well advised to stay overnight on the peninsula. Both quality accommodation (four 4-star and two 3½-star, RACT rated) and camping facilities are available
